It is almost Valentine’s Day! It has always been such a fun day to celebrate
LOVE in our home. Growing up, Valentine’s Day was always a big day in our home. My Mom always made it special (I even wrote a blog post about how to make Valentine’s Day special for kids and share our traditions) and we always had frosted sugar cookies and a skillet cookie.

One of my favorite things to do is simply perusing the aisles of Home Goods. Anyone else with me? It is one of my happy places. I stumbled upon a heart cast iron skillet and it had to come home with me.

There’s something undeniably comforting about a warm chocolate chip cookie—especially when it’s baked in a cast iron skillet. The edges get golden and crisp, while the center stays thick, gooey, and utterly delicious. I wanted to try to turn our classic chocolate chip skillet cookie recipe into a Valentine’s Day skillet cookie in a heart shaped pan.

Instead of using chocolate chips, I added white chocolate chips and pink jimmies sprinkles. Have you ever heard of Ruby chocolate? It is a specialty pink chocolate made by Callebaut that tastes like a slightly fruity white chocolate. I added some ruby chocolate chips in as well. Another fun option is to add Valentine’s red, white, and pink M&M’s.

Ingredients:

  • Butter
  • Brown Sugar
  • Sugar
  • Egg
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Flour
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Mix-ins Choices: White Chocolate Chips, Pink Sprinkles, Valentine’s Day M&M’s, Ruby Chocolate Chips, Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

What size skillet should I use?

For this recipe, a 9- to 10-inch cast iron skillet is ideal. If you have a larger skillet, your cookie will be thinner and may bake faster. If you have a smaller skillet, it will be thicker and need a slightly longer bake time. Keep an eye on the cookie’s edges for doneness cues.

How to make Valentine’s Skillet Cookie:

This can all be made in one skillet or can be transferred to a skillet to bake in the oven.

  1. Heat a heart-shaped skillet, cast iron skillet or medium pan over medium-low heat. Add butter. Allow to melt completely and begin to brown. Stir often to watch for it to turn from a warm yellow color to a more amber yellow color. You may begin to see brown bits at the bottom. Remove from the heat to keep it from overbrowning.
  2. Stir in brown sugar and sugar. Keep stirring until the sugars are completely dissolved into the warm butter and the mixture is smooth. Set aside and let chill at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before adding the egg.
  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Once it has slightly chilled, add vanilla extract and stir together. Add in one egg and stir until all combined.
  4. Fold in flour, baking soda, and salt. Before adding any of the chocolate, make sure the cookie dough isn’t too warm. If it is too warm, wait until it is at room temperature before adding the chocolate.
  5. Fold in your mix-ins of choice — white chocolate chips, sprinkles, M&M’s, chocolate, etc.
  6. Spread the cookie dough into the skillet. I use a 9 or 10-inch cast iron skillet. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the cookie is firming up on the edges but still slightly gooey and underbaked in the center.
  7. Let cool slightly and then top with vanilla ice cream.

Why does my cookie sometimes end up undercooked in the center?

Skillet cookies are thicker than typical individual cookies, so they may take a little longer to cook through. If you notice the center is still quite raw, tent a piece of foil over the skillet to prevent the edges from over-browning, and continue baking in 2–3 minute increments.

Where can I buy heart shaped skillet?

I found my heart-shaped cast iron skillet at Home Goods for $14.99. It was an awesome brand called Smith and Clark and it is perfect! I have also seen it at TJ Maxx and Marshall’s so keep a look out for it. It comes in pink, white, and red.

If you are looking for something on Amazon, I found a heart pan for $20. It is larger at 11-inches so you will have a thinner skillet cookie. I found another heart skillet at Wal-Mart but it is pricier at $39.97. There’s the famous LeCreuset heart shaped skillet for 149.95 but I think that I will stick to my $15 skillet. 🙂 You can also find heart shaped skillets at Crate and Barrel and Williams-Sonoma.
