This is Christmas Crack but even better! This homemade chocolate toffee bark is made with crunchy pretzels, soft buttery toffee, rich chocolate, and Heath bar chocolate toffee bits. This is a super easy Christmas crack recipe and perfect to share around the holidays.
Fair warning…this treat is addicting.
We are obsessed with this Pretzel Christmas Crack in our home and it gets devoured by my teenage kids and friends all of the time. I found a way to make Christmas crack even better…just add pretzels!
What is Christmas Crack?
Christmas crack, also known as toffee bark or Christmas toffee, is a sweet and addictive treat that combines the perfect balance of salty, sweet, and crunchy.
Christmas crack can be made with saltine crackers or mini pretzels and after making both versions many times…my favorite is Christmas Crack with pretzels.
Why you will love Pretzel Toffee Bark:
- The combination of buttery toffee, rich chocolate, salty pretzels, and festive toppings makes this a treat you will crave over and over again!
- It is so easy to make! You can make large batches which makes it ideal for sharing with friends and family during the holidays.
- It is made with only 5 ingredients! It is such a simple Christmas bark that everyone loves.
Making Christmas Crack with Pretzels:
To add a unique twist to the classic Christmas crack recipe, try using pretzels instead of saltine crackers. The salty and crunchy pretzels pair perfectly with the sweet toffee and chocolate layers.
Tips for making Chocolate Toffee Pretzel Bark:
- Use High-Quality Ingredients: Choose good-quality chocolate, fresh butter, and high-grade pretzels for the best flavor. I suggest using Ghirardelli or Guittard if possible.
- Experiment with Toppings: Get creative with your toppings! Crushed candy canes, Heath bar toffee bits, mini M & M’s, or even a drizzle of white chocolate.
- Perfect the Toffee: Achieve the ideal toffee consistency by ensuring it reaches a proper boil. Be patient during this step for the best results.
- Cooling is Key: Allow the Christmas crack to cool thoroughly before breaking it into pieces. This ensures a clean break and prevents a gooey mess. I suggest placing it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes.
How to make Christmas Crack:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Arrange the mini pretzels (or saltine crackers) in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
- In a saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture reaches a boil. Allow it to boil for 3 minutes without stirring.
- Pour the toffee mixture over the pretzels, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
- Bake in the oven for 5 minutes and make sure the toffee is bubbling and golden.
- Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips over the toffee layer. Return to the oven and let melt for 1 minute. Then spread the melted chocolate evenly.
- Sprinkle your choice of festive toppings over the melted chocolate. I suggest Heath bar bits for extra toffee flavor.
- Allow the Christmas crack to cool completely before breaking it into pieces. I suggest placing it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes.
Storage:
Once it has cooled and set-up, break it into pieces and store it at room temperature in an airtight container.
You can also freeze it in freezer-safe Ziploc bags.
Christmas crack, with its irresistible combination of sweet and salty goodness, has rightfully earned its place as a cherished holiday treat. Put it in festive tins and share with friends and family.
