Do you want to make the most flavorful, mouthwatering, juicy grilled chicken? I have the recipe for you and all of the secrets to the best chicken marinade! This recipe has consistently received 5-star reviews for over 5 years and is the most popular chicken recipe.
When we were newly married, we lived near Dean’s brother, his wife, and two kids. We were living in an apartment, going to college full-time, and working crazy hours to pay the bills. We were poor little college students and would love when Deron and Sarah would invite us over for dinner.
Their go-to meal was grilled chicken in a delish marinade. They knew how much we loved it so we ate it almost every time we had dinner at their home.
So I had to ask her what was in this amazing chicken marinade recipe. It is beyond simple! I decided to tweak it and add a few more flavors to make it extra tangy and zesty. This grilled chicken marinade will become a staple in your home too!
Chicken Marinade Ingredients:
Everything you need is most likely in your pantry and refrigerator. This is all about layers upon layers of flavor from fresh lemon juice to tangy balsamic vinegar. It makes the most flavorful grilled chicken!
This Grilled Chicken Marinade Recipe is made with extra virgin olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar,ย ย Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, and pepper. You have such a variety of seasonings in this marinade.
What do I love about this Grilled Chicken?
The extra virgin olive oil keeps the chicken extra moist and juicy.
Fresh lemon juice and balsamic vinegar break down the fibers in the chicken to make it tender.
The soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce give it a salty depth of flavor.
The brown sugar adds some rich sweetness and gives the chicken a nice crust when grilled.
All of the ingredients work together in harmony to make the perfect chicken marinade!
How long should I marinate chicken?
The key is to let the chicken marinate for at least 30 minutes. This allows the marinade ingredients to infuse flavors and moisture into the chicken for the juiciest, most flavorful chicken you will ever eat!
Pierce the chicken breasts with a fork all over to ensure the marinade can seep into the chicken to make it juicy.ย What is an ideal amount of time to marinate chicken? An ideal marinating time is 4 – 5 hours.
How to grill chicken and how long to cook grilled chicken?
To grill the chicken, set your grill at medium heat.ย Allow it to preheat before placing the chicken on the grill.ย
To keep the chicken from sticking, brush a bit of oil on the grill.
Cook for about 5 – 6 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the chicken breast. The chicken needs to reach 165 degrees to ensure that it is completely cooked through. I suggest using a food thermometer for ensure the perfectly cooked and juiciest grilled chicken.
What type of chicken should I use?
Use whatever types of chicken you prefer — chicken breasts, thinly sliced chicken breasts, chicken tenders, or chicken thighs.ย
Thinly sliced chicken breast will cook faster than traditional chicken breasts. Chicken tenders and thinly sliced chicken breast will cook much quicker than thick chicken breasts so watch carefully.

Happy Cooking, my friends!
What a great marinade. Even the pickiest eating 10yo likes it! I just added a dash of Rosemary. Definitely a keeper! Thank you!
Made as written, killer marinade! I actually did a huge batch of bone-in, skinless thighs. I marinated for 24 hours, then grilled 1/2 on the Cowboy Grill with apple wood and cherry wood until internal temp was 75c, checked with my Thermapen. I realized I had WAY too much chicken so I froze the other half, in the remaining marinade. 24 hours gave the chicken great flavour, and the chicken that was frozen in the marinade froze very well. The frozen chicken was awesome once thawed and grilled. Possibly even better than the one that just marinated for 24 hours. My wife made sure I bookmarked your recipe, a keeper.
So delicious! We like chicken on a bun in my house and so im saving this marinade recipe to put in rotation. I love marinades that enhance the chickens flavour, not dominate it. I only marinated 40 min and the chicken came out tender, juicy and bursting with flavour. Thank you!
I come back to this chicken marinade every time. My friends have complimented me and asked for the recipe. This is the best marinade.
how long do you let it cook for? Michael has never cooked, but he is thrilled smells so good
Itโs fantastic! This is our new marinade when grilling chicken. Last night my teenager ate 5 pieces of chicken. The only substitution I make is subbing Splenda brown sugar for regular. Love this!
Okayโฆ.this was the absolute BEST marinade for chicken that Iโve ever tasted! We marinated it for 6 hours, poked holes with the fork and grilled it. It was incredible! It will definitely be my GO-TO recipe from now on! Good grief thank you! Iโve been through a thousand marinades and this one takes the cake (or chicken rather ๐ )
Thank you so much, Rebecca, for such a kind comment! I am so happy you loved the chicken marinade recipe and that it takes the cake. Hahaha! Thank you for trying my recipe.
Amazing! The marinade is delicious by itself and the chicken comes out juicy and so flavorful. My picky son also loves it. It has layers of flavor and has a hint of Asian bbq ribs too. I think this is the best marinade I’ve tried.
Hi Susie! I appreciate your kind words so much. Thank you for trying it and I love to hear when picky kids love it too. That makes my day!
I love this recipe. The only change I made is that I used a 1/2 THM Gentle Sweet & 1 tsp blackstrap molasses instead of the brown sugar. This is my โGo Toโ
Chicken marinade! ๐
Thank you so much for trying my recipe and I love the suggestions! Thank you for sharing.
Made this today and itโs a winner! I also threw some sliced onions in with the chicken to marinate then put them in a grilling basket and they were great with the chicken!
This is my new favourite way to do chicken breast (which I donโt usually like). I canโt grill today – can I do it in the oven? At what temp and for how long? Thank you!
Hi Jess! You can do it in the oven as well. I would suggest a meat therometer for accuracy. You can do it at 400 degrees for about 16-18 minutes but it really depends on the thickness of the chicken breast. You want it to reach 165 degrees.
Hi Andra! What a brilliant idea! I love the idea of adding some sliced onions for extra flavor. Thank you for sharing!
