We can’t stop making these Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies in our home. We literally made 3 batches in 2 days! They disappear so quickly in our home and then my kids beg me to make more. Sadie has declared them, “her favorite cookie ever.” You won’t miss this flour in these cookies at all!

As I have shared before, I have been on and off a gluten-free diet for about 10 years. So when I am completely gluten-free, I focus on creating gluten-free recipes to satisfy my cookie cravings. This cookie recipe doesn’t even taste gluten-free! These cookies are made with simple ingredients — butter, brown sugar, sugar, creamy peanut butter, eggs, gluten-free oats, baking soda, salt, and milk chocolate chips.

My friend, Tawni, has been begging for me to create a gluten-free cookie recipe. I had to make sure it passed even the toughest critics and this one passed with flying colors.

I use Trader Joe’s Gluten-Free rolled oats even though oats are naturally gluten free. You can read more about if oats are considered gluten-free down below. I found this information on the official site of Bob’s Red Mill.

Are Oats Gluten-Free?

As we mentioned, oats themselves are naturally gluten free. However, as with all foods, there are also some concerns with oatmeal that gluten intolerant people will want to be aware of to avoid any issues or painful flareups. Although many oats are safe for gluten intolerant individuals, cross-contamination can occur in facilities or even in fields where wheat, rye or barley are also present. There are of course different sensitivity levels when it comes to gluten, which will change things as well. If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with celiac disease, this is typically the most extreme form of gluten intolerance with the most sensitivity to gluten contamination.

Hopefully, that helps clear up any confusion. You are going to love these gluten-free chocolate chip oatmeal cookies!

How to make Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies:

  1. Cream butter and sugars together for at least 3-4 minutes, until light and fluffy. This helps to create a smooth texture and gives the cookies a good amount of loft when they hit the oven. Add peanut butter and mix for 1 minute longer. I use creamy Jif peanut butter. I would suggest using peanut butter which includes sugar or you may end up with drier cookies.
  2. Add eggs one at a time, scraping the sides of the bowl after each addition. Add vanilla extract
  3. Fold in oats, baking soda, salt, and milk chocolate chips
  4. If time is on your side, chill this cookie dough for 24 hours. When you roll the dough into balls and place them on a baking sheet, you may want to slightly flatten the cookies with your hand if you want thinner cookies.
  5. Watch carefully to not overbake these cookies. They are meant to be soft and chewy. Let them sit for 5 minutes before moving to cooling rack.

Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Oatmeal Cookies. Soft chewy chocolate chip peanut butter oatmeal cookies. The best gluten-free chocolate chip oatmeal cookies!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 24

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup Brown Sugar
  • 3/4 cup Sugar
  • 3/4 cup Creamy Peanut Butter (such as Jif or Skippy's)
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 3 cups Gluten-Free Rolled Oats
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 12 ounces Milk Chocolate Chips (2 cups)

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, and sugar for 3-4 minutes or until light and fluffy. Scrape the sides of the bowl. Add the peanut butter and mix for 1 minute longer.
  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add vanilla extract.
  • Stir in rolled oats, baking soda, and salt. Fold in milk chocolate chips.
  • I suggest chilling the dough for at least 30 minutes. The dough does get even better if you can chill it overnight (or for 24 hours). The cookies will have more loft to them if you chill the dough. Wrap the dough tightly in Saran Wrap.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a light-colored baking sheet and line it with parchment paper or Silpat for easier removal. Drop cookie dough onto a baking sheet.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes. Let set up for 5 minutes before removing from baking sheet.

Notes

  • I used Trader Joe's Gluten Free Rolled Oatsย
  • I used Ghiardelli milk chocolate chips. I love Guittard milk chocolate chips as well.ย
  • I used Jif creamy peanut butter and Land O' Lakes unsalted butter.ย

I was craving a chocolate chip peanut butter oatmeal cookie, and Pinterest delivered!
This recipe is delicious. I will definitely be making them again.

  2. OMG these cookies are so good I cannot believe it!
I have been gluten-free for about two years and this is one of the best tasting sweets. Iโ€™ve had I let the dough sit for 24 hours before I cooked them.
Even if youโ€™re not gluten-free, youโ€™ve got to try these!!

These are fantastic! I made a few tweaks, mostly to accommodate what I had in the pantry: Cut the total sugar down to 1 cup, using 1/2 white and 1/2 coconut, and used only about 8 oz. of chocolate chips; used salted butter; used the grind-your-own peanut butter, so no added sugar or salt and just a bit of texture. Even with those changes, this was hands-down the best oatmeal peanut butter chocolate chip cookie recipe Iโ€™ve tried (and Iโ€™ve tried a lot)! Theyโ€™re also better than any flour-based cookies Iโ€™ve had. Thank you for posting!

I substituted mimi M&Ms for the chocolate chips. I made these for Thanksgiving 2023 and my entire family (not gf) loved them. I loved that they don’t contain flour (Celiac). These are for sure going into my recipe box. Thank you for sharing.

WOOOWW!! I was skeptical at first because they are gluten free but honestly they are amazing!! I love this recipe and it will definitely be used often in my house.

These are hands down one of the best cookie recipes i have ever tasted. I can’t believe they don’t have any flour, they taste so amazing! The amount of oats it calls for is absolutely perfect and also just the right amount of peanut butter. I could almost say i like them better than her “Best Chocolate Chip Cookies Ever” recipe.

  7. I made these and doubled the recipe and subbed PB for creamy Almond Butter. Unfortunately they crumbled and fell apart. So I had to put them in longer for at least 30 mins for them to actually stay and hold it’s shape. They still tasted good nonetheless but needed longer time in the oven.
