Frosted Snickerdoodle Cookies
Soft, chewy cinnamon sugar snickerdoodle cookies topped with a sweet buttery cream cheese frosting and topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar.
It is December 1st so bring on the Christmas cookies! I love this time of year for so many reasons. When I was first married and raising young kids, I would stay up to the wee hours of the morning make at least 6 different varieties of Christmas goodies to bring to neighbors and friends.
It started out small — just bringing to our neighbors but it soon turned into all of our close friends AND neighbors. At one point we were delivering to about 50 homes and I always needed a long winter’s nap when it was all said and done. But I loved the feeling of baking cookies for those we love and sharing them.
I have found that one of the most popular cookies I would deliver to our friends and neighbors is my SNICKERDOODLE COOKIES. This is actually one of the most popular recipes on Modern Honey! It has been a recipe that has been in our family for so many years. It makes the softest, chewiest, tangiest snickerdoodle cookies!
So I wanted to elevate my snickerdoodle cookies this year by adding a little frosting on the top. The sweet homemade cream cheese frosting just makes the snickerdoodle cookies even more gourmet. I think you will love these Frosted Snickerdoodle Cookies!
These Snickerdoodle Cookies with frosting start off with a homemade cinnamon sugar snickerdoodle cookie which is topped with a cream cheese frosting and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. The buttery cream cheese frosting compliments the sweet and tangy snickerdoodle cookie and it brings it all together. The cream cheese frosting is made with sweet cream butter, a touch of cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla.

Equipment
Ingredients
Snickerdoodles:
- 1 cup Unsalted Butter (softened)
- 1 1/2 cups Sugar
- 2 large Eggs
- 2 teaspoons Vanilla
- 2 3/4 cups Flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
- 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 3/4 teaspoon Salt (if using salted butter, reduce salt to 1/4 teaspoon)
Cinnamon-Sugar Mixture:
- 1/4 cup Sugar
- 1/2 Tablespoon Cinnamon
Frosting:
- 12 Tablespoons (3/4 cup) Butter (softened)
- 4 ounces Cream Cheese (softened)
- 3 cups Powdered Sugar
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar for 4-5 minutes until light and fluffy.ย Scrape the sides of the bowl and add the eggs and vanilla. Cream for 1-2 minutes longer.ย ย
- Stir in flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt, just until combined.ย
- In a small bowl, stir together sugar and cinnamon.ย
- If time allows, wrap the dough and let refrigerate for 20-30 minutes.ย Roll into small balls until round and smooth.ย Drop into the cinnamon-sugar mixture and coat well. Using a spoon, coat for a second time, ensuring the cookie balls are completely covered.ย *To make flatter snickerdoodles, press down in the center of the ball before placing it in the oven. This helps to keep them from puffing up in the middle. *
- Place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Bake for 9-11 minutes.ย Let cool for several minutes on the baking sheet before removing it from the pan.ย ย
To make frosting:
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and cream cheese for about 3 minutes. Add powdered sugar and vanilla. Mix until fully incorporated. If you want a thinner frosting, add 1 Tablespoon of milk or cream. Spread on cooled cookies. Sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar.
- May serve chilled.

Recipe directions need to be a bit clearer for us novice bakers. For example, the direction to roll into small balls – how small? Teaspoon size? Tablespoon? Approximately how many cookies does the the recipe make?
I also found that baking only 9-11 minutes left the insides a little too undone, and I flattened the cookies first. This could be my oven, but it seems to run pretty close to expected for other recipes. Also I ran out of the sugar/cinnamon mix after only half the cookies were coated so I had to mix up a second batch. My guessing how much longer to bake resulted in some crispy cookies and some more chewy, but they were all pretty good. Havenโt frosted them yet but will tackle that tomorrow.
I love snickerdoodles and this frosting only made it better. Such a good recipe.
I have loved your snickerdoodle recipe since you shared it with us. This is a fun twist to the recipe and gives me my fix when wanting something frosted. Fun to make w/my grandkids and loved by all. Yours truly, Richard.
Hey do these need to be refrigerated? (Frosting)If not how long do they last without refrigeration? Thanks!
I had never eaten or made snickerdoodle cookies before. I made these with the cream cheese frosting, which came out soft and delicious. My dad is 97 years old with Alzheimerโs, a lack of molars and a serious sweet tooth. These cookies were so soft enabling him to eat them without effort. He loves them. He canโt remember ever having had them before. Therefore he is delighted anew every evening after dinner as he experiences the delights of these frosted snickerdoodles for what he believes is the first time. They were the best Christmas gift for him, but for me as well. Thank you for helping me put that huge smile and look of awe on my dadโs face.
Such a sweet experience, Sher! Hearing how much your dad loved these cookies made me excited to try them. What a priceless experience!!!
Thank you so much, Sher, for such a kind comment. I am so glad to hear that your Dad was able to eat them — that makes me so happy. I bet he appreciated so much you making them for him!
My father-in-law had Alzheimer’s and it was so hard for him to eat most foods. Thank you for trusting my recipe and for taking time to comment. It made my day!
Absolutely delicious! We really like snicker doodles, but I wanted to make them a bit more special for Christmas. Perfect! I cut the frosting recipe in half, intending to frost only half the cookies, but had just enough to do all of them.
Do these freeze well?
Made these tonight, super awesome! Surprisingly decadent. My 7-yesr-old junior chef helped out. Cream cheese frosting gets me every time. I love your copper wire cooling rack, very cool!
Excited to try! Was curious how small should the rolls of dough be?
My favorite cookie is a snickerdoodle. To me they are not to sweet just right in every way.. I bake several batches of these little delights every year. I have never frosted them but, I’m going to try this year. Thanks for the recipe…I love these cookies. Happy Baking!!!
