If youโ€™re a fan of buttery croissants and golden waffles, then youโ€™re going to fall in love with the croffle! This hybrid treat combines the flaky, buttery goodness of a croissant with the crisp texture of a waffle, creating a breakfast or dessert that is craveworthy.

You may have seen these shops popping up selling croffles or croissant waffles with all sorts of toppings. I have been dying to try them because it is a combination of two things that I love — a croissant and a waffle!

Since I didn’t want to go through the work of making homemade croissants from scratch (it is a labor of love!), I drove down to my local Whole Foods grocery store and picked up their refrigerated croissant dough. I am SO picky about my bakeries but I do love so many things at Whole Foods (think chantilly cake, brown butter chocolate chip cookies, croissant dough, etc).

Well, the croffles didn’t disappoint! The problem was that I kept thinking about them all day long and would go downstairs to the kitchen for “one more bite.” They are dangerously good!

I will be sharing how to make your own croffles at home, share some tips and tricks, and answer common questions to help you achieve croffle perfection.

What is a Croffle?

A croffle is a mashup of a croissant and a waffle. Itโ€™s made by placing croissant dough into a waffle iron, which cooks the dough into a crispy, golden waffle with the tender, layered interior of a croissant.

Ingredients:

Making croffles is incredibly simple, especially if you start with pre-made croissant dough. Hereโ€™s what youโ€™ll need:

  • Whole Foods Croissant Dough: This is an excellent option for making croffles. The dough is easy to work with and bakes up beautifully in a waffle iron.

  • Trader Joeโ€™s Frozen Croissants: Another great option, though youโ€™ll need to thaw and proof them before cooking. This will take a little more planning ahead of time.
  • Other Croissant Dough Options: You can use any store-bought croissant dough, such as Pillsburyโ€™s refrigerated croissant dough or other bakery-fresh options. I have NOT recipe tested the Pillsbury croissant dough yet so stay tuned. For a more artisanal approach, homemade croissant dough can be used as well.
  • Optional: Sugar Pearls: To add a touch of sweetness and crunch, you can incorporate sugar pearls by pressing into the dough before cooking.
  • Toppings: Fresh fruits, whipped cream, maple syrup, Nutella, powdered sugar, or even savory options like cheese and ham.

Croffle Tip:

I have had great success using the refrigerated croissant dough at Whole Foods. You can find it near the bakery section in a small refrigerator.

How to cook a Croffle (Croissant Waffle):

This may be the easiest breakfast hack of all time! You literally

Prepare the Dough: If using Whole Foods croissant dough, just remove from the refrigerator. If youโ€™re using Trader Joeโ€™s frozen croissants, allow them to thaw and proof according to package instructions. For other pre-made doughs, follow the manufacturerโ€™s instructions.

Preheat Your Waffle Iron: Heat your waffle iron to medium heat. You want it hot enough to cook the dough through without burning it.

Grease the Waffle Iron. To ensure the croissant dough doesn’t stick, spray with a non-stick cooking spray.

Add Sugar Pearls (Optional): If you want to add sugar pearls, press them evenly on one side of the dough. I use these Belgian Pearl Sugar Crystals.

Cook the Croffle: Place the prepared dough in the center of the waffle iron. Close the lid and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the croffle is golden brown and crispy. I suggest cooking them at a medium temperature to allow the croissant to be fully cooked through without becoming too brown. Cooking time may vary depending on your waffle iron and dough thickness.

Check for Doneness: The croffle is done when it is a light golden brown color with crisp edges. The inside should be cooked through but still tender and flaky.

You can store them at room temperature for up to 2 days. If you want to keep them longer, freeze them by placing the wrapped croffles in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 2 months.

To reheat croffles, use an oven or toaster oven for the best results. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and place the croffles on a baking sheet. Heat them for about 5-7 minutes or until they are warm and crisp. Avoid using a microwave, as it can make the croffles soggy rather than crispy.

This method ensures your croffles retain their deliciously crisp exterior and tender, flaky layers inside.
