Welcome to Day 1 of our 12 Days of Christmas Cookies. We are starting off with a classic — M&M Christmas Cookies. This is one of my personal favorite cookies of all time!
Why you will love these M&M Cookies:
The best Christmas M&M Cookies are perfectly soft and chewy in the center with buttery, crispy edges and filled with chocolate M&M candies.
These popular M & M cookies are such a crowd-pleaser and they look so festive for the holidays. These are perfect to put on your Christmas cookie plate or to put out for Santa. You are going to love this m&m cookie recipe!
Christmas M&M Cookie Ingredients:
You only need simple ingredients to make these festive Christmas cookies.
- Butter — you can use salted or unsalted butter in this M & M cookie recipe. If you use salted butter, reduce the salt by 1/4 teaspoon.
- Brown Sugar — this is what gives the cookies that perfectly chewy center.
- Sugar — this is what gives the cookie sweetness and crisp edges.
- Eggs — this is the binder that pulls the liquid and dry ingredients together.
- Vanilla Extract — use pure vanilla extract in cookies for authentic flavor.
- Flour — use all-purpose flour in these cookies.
- Cornstarch — this is what gives the cookies the extra soft texture.
- Baking Soda — this gives the cookies the perfect rise.
- Salt — a flavor enhancer and a must in all baking recipes.
- M&M Chocolate Candies — plain M&M’s are perfect in this recipe. You can also use holiday mint flavored M&M’s.
How to make Soft M&M Cookies:
- Cream butter, brown sugar, and sugar together for 4 minutes until light and fluffy. This helps to create a smooth textured cookie and also give loft to the cookie dough which helps the cookies to rise once they hit the oven.
- Add eggs and pure vanilla extract and mix for 1 minute longer.
- Fold in flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt. Be careful not to overmix once you add the dry ingredients as it can create too much gluten in the dough and will result in a tougher cookie.
- Fold in chocolate M & M candies. Scoop onto parchment paper lined, light-colored baking sheet.
- Bake just until a light golden color. You don’t want to overbake as the cookies will continue to bake on the cookie sheet once it is removed from the oven. It is better to underbake than overbake!
- To make the M & M cookies look extra gourmet, add a few M&M’s on the top of the cookies once you pull them from the oven.
Storage and Freezing:
These cookies stay fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days.
These freeze so well. I suggest placing a freezer safe Ziploc bag and freezing for up to 3 months.

We love these cookies! So yummy
These cookies come out perfectly every time! SO GOOD!
Should I be using packed or pourable brown sugar? Thanks! Happy holidays!!
AMAZING COOKIES!!!!
I have made M&M Holiday Cookies for over 2 decades and this recipe, by far, is the best version. I made them today, exactly as the recipe states and they are perfectly chewy with just a little bit of crunchy edges.
Thanks so much!!
Made these for my church class last Sunday and they LOVED them….perfect Christmas time treat. Nice that you can change out the colors of the M&M’s depending on the holiday. Great cookies!
Hello, I just wanted to verify the oven temperature in this recipe is 385ยฐ. I’ve never seen that temperature used before so I wanted to check. Thanks!
That threw me off too, so Iโm going to put my oven on 350. Hope it comes out good.
Hi Devi! That is the correct baking temperature for the M & M cookies.
Our family is OBSESSED with your “Soft M&M Cookies” recipe! I did a side-by-side comparison of the recipes and am wondering – is there a discernible difference (cause it’s the same ingredients just slightly different measurements)? Def would love to hear which one is your keeper because your “Soft M&M Cookies” is always our go-to!!
I would like to try these cookies, but first have a couple questions:
What size cookie scoop are you using? The recipe says it makes 20 servings, does that mean 20 cookies? The cookies do seem large in the picture.
Also, did you use mini m&ms or the regular size? I’m wondering since the cookies could look larger if the m&ms are smaller.
Hi! These are great questions. I use a medium sized cookie scoop and I linked the exact one that I used in the recipe post. It is from oxo and makes the perfect sized cookies. I usually make them anywhere between 2.5 – 3 ounce balls, if you own a digital food scale. This recipe makes about 18-24 cookies, depending on how large you make them. I use regular-sized M & M’s but mini M & M’s would work beautifully as well.
Appreciate your response.
Excellent choice. I alwรกys buy bags of red & green M&Ms this time of year. I will give these a try. Any suggestions for mint M&Ms?
These are a great cookie for any Holiday. I have always loved these cookies, they are buttery and just a little crispy around the edges. I change out the color of the M & M’s depending on The Holiday….Always included on the cookie plates I give to friends and family….
