AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE HEALTHY JOURNEY:
Here is where I am going to get a little personal. I was a healthy and active girl when I got hit with an autoimmune disease that rocked my world. I visited the doctor and he performed an insane amount of blood tests to figure out what was going on with my body.
I was dealing with the debilitating effects of several autoimmune diseases — rheumatoid arthritis and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis diseases, among others.
I didn’t think I would be dealing with arthritis in my 30’s! My weight had even skyrocketed for no apparent reason (which would put any woman in a tailspin).
After many blood tests confirmed I was dealing with several autoimmune issues, I was referred to both a rheumatologist and an endocrinologist to deal with the effects of my immune system going haywire.
What is an autoimmune disease?
Autoimmune diseases are complex conditions in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues, leading to a range of symptoms and health issues.
An autoimmune disease is a condition in which the immune system, which is designed to protect the body from harmful substances like bacteria, viruses, and other foreign invaders, mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, and organs within the body.
In people with autoimmune diseases, the immune system fails to recognize certain parts of the body as “self” and, instead, mounts an immune response against its own cells and tissues. This can lead to inflammation, tissue damage, and various symptoms and health issues.
The specialists wanted to put me on a host of medications to help with the swelling and inflammation, all with a list of negative side effects. I felt as if I was ALWAYS at the doctor. I didn’t want to just put on a band-aid.
I went home and my husband and I just sobbed together on the couch (which he may not like me admitting publicly since he is not a crier), afraid of what the future might hold.
After a good cry, I felt determined to figure out what the ROOT cause of my health issues was. I started studying like crazy. I began driving around to every library in town, picking up stacks of health books, and researching everything I could about my disease. I became a full-on nerd!
I kept reading over and over about the powerful healing powers of whole foods. After much research, I decided to implement a 30-day healthy food plan. It included only cold-pressed juices, whole food smoothies, vegetables, fresh fruit, fish, and chicken. Nothing else.
Being the baker that I am, it just about killed me! Okay, truth be told….in reality, it gave me new life! I supplemented my diet with a whole host of herbs that help with inflammation and autoimmune disorders. I filled my refrigerator with the freshest ingredients and spent hours at a time creating smoothies and filling glass jars with them. I drank everything from raw fermented beet juice to cleanse my liver to lemon turmeric drinks to help calm my inflammation.
Here is a photo that was taken in Texas of a week’s worth of healthy whole foods that I ate to try to heal myself and relieve some of my symptoms. It’s amazing what happened after going 30 days eating this way!
After several weeks, my swelling drastically improved and I was able to move around with ease. The best part was going to visit the doctor for another round of blood tests and finding out that the most alarming results were reversed!
I still had a long way to go but this was a start. I still have to treat my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis disease with Synthroid but I have found some natural supplements to help me feel better. I am not a doctor so please don’t take my experience as medical advice but but will share some things that have helped me.
Here are some key benefits of incorporating a whole food diet into your lifestyle when dealing with autoimmune diseases:
1. Reduced Inflammation:
Whole foods are rich in anti-inflammatory properties, such as antioxidants and phytonutrients, which can help reduce inflammation in the bodyโa common issue in autoimmune conditions.
2. Improved Gut Health:
A healthy gut is essential for managing autoimmune diseases, as it is often linked to the immune system. Whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, provide fiber that supports gut health and aids in digestion.
3. Balanced Nutrient Intake:
Whole foods provide a wide range of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats, which are vital for maintaining a strong immune system and managing the symptoms of autoimmune diseases.
4. Weight Management:
A whole food diet, centered around nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, can aid in weight management, which is crucial for individuals with autoimmune diseases, as excess weight can exacerbate symptoms.
Harnessing the Power of Whole Foods
Fruit smoothies are a delicious and convenient way to incorporate a variety of whole, nutrient-rich foods into your diet. Here’s how fruit smoothies can be particularly beneficial for those with autoimmune diseases:
1. Nutrient Density:
Fruit smoothies allow you to blend a variety of fruits and vegetables into one delicious drink, providing a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can support the immune system and overall health.
2. Easy Digestion:
Blending fruits and vegetables breaks down their fibers, making the nutrients easily digestible and absorbable for individuals with sensitive digestive systems, which is often the case with autoimmune diseases.
Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you have specific dietary restrictions or concerns, consult a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian for personalized advice and guidance.

If I am suffering from anything – from allergies to autoimmune issues to overeating the night before, this helps to clean out my liver and belly. I woke up this morning with swollen eyes caused by allergies and this drink helped the swelling go down quickly. You can drink it heated up or drink it cold straight out of the refrigerator. We make a large pitcher and keep it in the refrigerator to last a week. We give it a good stir and guzzle it down.

Hi,
As these recipes are for four servings, will it hold in the fridge over the four days?
Last year during a routine check up/blood test I was diagnosed with a parathyroid issue. Never heard about this before so have been doing a lot of research and do not want to take the surgery route as the doctor suggested. I started to juice and am trying to eat healthier. During my research today, I came across your sight and you have great information. My question is do you have any suggestions on juicing for parathyroidism? Have you ever come across this topic? Any information would help and thank you so much!
Awesome post! I made your choco powerhouse smoothies yesterday and my kids loved it a lot! I’m gonna try out the other recipes as well! Thanks for this great sharing!
I know this is a very old post, but just wanted to say if you are still struggling with any health issues at all, and have not already, try getting off the Synthroid. I suffered needlessly for 4 years on Synthroid before switching to natural dessicated thyroid. I also supplemented my main dose with the generic of Cytomel (T3 only drug). The improvements to my energy, focus, and weight loss-FINALLY!- were amazing. I’d suggest trying NP Thyroid from Acella. If an endocrinologist won’t prescribe it, many naturopathic or holistic doctors will. If NP doesn’t work for you, you could also try Armour. Best wishes for great health!
Hi I was reading your story and I’m sorry what you are going through I my self was very sick my friends told me to give up all meat I did even fish and chicken then next I gave up all dairy products that when I started to completely heal you should look up medical medium the book he tells you what to take to heal please look him up you won’t regret I his name is Anthony William
I have recently become a surrogate, after losing 250 lbs all naturally. This was the end goal, and I knew that pregnancy weight gain was going to be a mental struggle, however, I did not realize it would be this much of a struggle! Today I am entering my 13th week, and I’ve gained over 20 lb already. During the first trimester, it is normal to gain at 4 to 6 pounds. I’m way over budget already!
I was maintaining my weight for a year-and-a-half before entering this journey. Not only do I have my own hormones raging, but I also wad on hormone medication for the first couple of months. I guess I didn’t consider all of this!! But here I am, gaining weight, being blessed with the ability to bring a child into this world for another couple. Not only do I need to be healthy physically, but mentally as well! I have been considering going on a “diet’, but need something safe during pregnancy…
It was considering the doing a juice cleanse. I have never done it, and I know the commercial ones are crazy expensive, and I don’t want to buy a juicer. I know juice cleanses are great, I read all the reviews, but I do love the whole nutrients of whole fruits and vegetables. So while doing my research, I stumbled across your website regarding your juice cleanse. Which thankfully, had a hyperlink to this blog regarding your smoothies!
Here I go!!! Starting today, I am going to attempt the 30 day smoothie regimen for a physically and mentally healthier pregnant me! The goal: Lose the addition unnecessary weight that I have gained, lose the extra bloat & inflammation, gain my energy back, and destroy this mental struggle!
During my weight loss, and now, I have been very active at the gym. Honestly, I would have never lost the weight without my gym membership! I adore food, healthy and unhealthy, and wouldn’t have been able to do it on diet alone. I still eat like a fat kid, LOL, but I workout out like a maniac! When I became pregnant, I continued to eat like a fat kid, but no longer have the energy to workout like a maniac. This is the downfall: The balance is no longer here.
I am hopeful that this 30-day smoothie recharge will assist with this. Obviously I have additional nutritional needs while being pregnant, so I will be adding more protein in. I’m optimistic, and excited to start this! I did read that turmeric is unlikely safe for pregnancy in medicinal dosages, so I will be skipping that unfortunately, even though I was looking forward to trying it to see if it will help with the knee pain.
Thanks for posting this!
I thank you for sharing your wisdom and guidance on the topic. I found your blog while looking up some great smoothies as I am trying to eat more healthy as I am also trying to be fit. Thanks again.
Thank you Melissa! I suffer from these issues too and I canโt wait to try them and begin to feel better!
Hi MH …. Your dogged determination to get healthy is inspirational! Thank you so much for sharing your story and your recipes.
I have had Parkinson’s Disease going on 15 years now. I have come to the realization that I believe my poor diet, sleeping habits and stress was largely the root cause of PD.
My health depends om a slew of meds (4 meds, 5 times per day) …. So you know that can’t be too good for anyone. I now understand the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle. I never got sick before and thought I was invincible …. I sadly found out otherwise!
I am a single guy who doesn’t cook much but I know I need to eat better. So I thought about smoothies as being easy to make and taste good too.
When I saw your recipes contain a lot of the antioxidants and natural healing foods that my own research has uncovered …. ginger, turmeric, blueberries… I feel I’m on the right track…. especially if they have been “kid-tested”.
I can’t give your recipes a rating yet, because I have not made any, but as soon as I make some (next week) I’ll be sure to follow-up with that!
same christo bro
